My eldest son used to jump up in my bed when he was around 2 years old and carefully pile every pillow in the house on top of me. As I lay there, pleasantly smothered I could here his little voice asking me...

"...are you BASHED, daddy?...you BASHED?"

BROKE-ARM ALARM!

I heard Corey crying as he came in the front door - it was the kind of cry that sets off all the alarms in your head. Something was very wrong. My neighbor Dave was helping Corey inside and I could see in his face that something bad had happened.

"What happened?" I asked both Dave and Corey.

Dave said he didn't see what happened but the kids told him that Corey had an accident on a bicycle and they think he may have broken his right arm. Corey was sobbing and holding his right arm limply along the side of his body. He was worried that I would get mad and make him stay inside. Kids. I tried to touch his arm which was already badly swollen at the elbow and he shrieked. Not good.

"I want Mom" he sobbed

I called Mary who was at work and let her know that we were coming to see her, so to speak.

Once again we are off to the hospital, Emily flapping along glad to be getting out of the house, Casey holding an ice pack gingerly on Corey's elbow as he and I helped Corey into the truck.

The ER was PACKED...standing room only. This was going to be a long wait for Corey who's arm was getting so bad that even walking slowly was too much...

Mary met us down at the ER waiting room...she was the charge nurse on her floor and couldn't stay long because it was the end of her shift. Corey saw her and started to cry, telling her his story.

Eventually he was seen by the doctor, given some much needed codeine and xrayed. Broken radius in his right arm near the elbow joint. Ouch. He would need to be seen the next day by a orthopedic surgeon. They gave him a partial sling/cast, prescription for more drugs and sent him on his way. No school for you tomorrow, Corey

"Yesssss!" he said with a Tiger Woods fist-pump. The codeine was on-board and taking him for a ride. He was hilarious! Mary met us just as we were getting discharged from the ER, saw the xrays and shook her head.

"This is your FIFTH visit in SIX YEARS, Corey!"

Ya...don't we know it

He got his new cast the next day - one of the new kind that you can get wet (shower/pool) and it dries within the hour. FIVE WEEKS from now he can get it removed.

Until then...WISH US LUCK!
